The golden eagle is one of the largest birds in Udmurtia. It belongs to the family of hawks. This species is listed in the Endangered species list of the Udmurt Republic and Russia. Golden Eagles live in wooded steppes and forests of Eurasia, North Africa and North America. They can be seen in full grown forests that border with open spaces.

Golden eagles mostly feed on hares, marmots, foxes, and also black grouses and other birds. They can even attack roe deer, reindeer, or wild goats, especially when they are sick or infirm with old age. Golden eagles also hunt animals that have strayed from their herd. Near water bodies, they hunt semi-aquatic birds, muskrats and water rats become prey. In winter, golden eagles eat carrion.

The birds begin to breed at four to five years of age. They are monogamous, which means that they are faithful to their partners for a long time, until the death of one of the partners. Scientists have recorded the longest ‘marriage’ of a couple in the wild nature: two birds lived together for more than 32 years. The age of the birds can sometimes reach 50 years.
Golden Eagles prefer quiet places. They don’t like it when people are around. If they get anxious, they can even abandon a nest with eggs, despite the fact that they build nests high up in the trees. Usually golden eagles do not change the place where they make nests for future chicks, and use the same nest for several years in a row, only repairing it each year. Golden eagles lay only one or two eggs. All year round, female and male birds protect the nest from other feathered predators; they don’t leave it even in winter.

On average, an adult pair of golden eagles can raise no more than three chicks per year. The chicks are born in the same order as eggs are laid, with several days’ difference. When chicks hatch, they are covered with a white-grayish down.

From early age on, small golden eagles show their aggressiveness: the firstborn has more chances to survive. He pecks his brothers and sisters, pushes them away and takes away food. The surviving chicks gradually gain strength and begin to fly independently. Parents watch their fledglings for the first two or three weeks. Only when small eagles are three months old, they start to fly freely. However, during the first winter in their life, chicks need to stay close to their parents.
