The author of this painting was born in Naples, studied with Filippo Palizzi, who is known for his realistic works and his connection with the Barbizon school. Filippo Palizzi was a member of the art movement that arose in the 1830s and was known in Italy as the Posilippo School. Posilippo is a hilly ledge in the northern part of the Gulf of Naples, located within today’s city of Naples. From there, a magnificent view of the bay opened. A small painting by Filippo Palizzi “The Cow”, as well as the landscape by Hagemann, was received by Radischev Museum from Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov’s collection.
Like his teacher, Godefroy De Hagemann exhibited his works in Paris in 1859, 1861, 1872 and 1876, and in Nantes in 1861. His paintings Swamp in the Forest and Landscape with Cows belong to the collection of Nantes Museum. Landscapes by Hagemann are exhibited in museums of Chartres, Dijon, and in K. A. Savitsky Penza Art Gallery. He painted landscapes and animals.
Like many contemporaries, Hagemann loved traveling and visited Eastern countries. The traditional attribution of the landscape is confirmed by the similarity of our painting with the signed work by Hageman from Penza Art Gallery (Landscape, Oil on wood, 29 × 26.5).Like his teacher, Godefroy De Hagemann exhibited his works in Paris in 1859, 1861, 1872 and 1876, and in Nantes in 1861.
