According to Alexey Petrovich Bogolyubov’s plan, the museum was to form a single whole with the drawing school, and serve as an educational base for it.
Emperor Alexander III supported the educational ideas of the museum founder. About 30 paintings by old masters, works of sculpture and applied art were selected from the holdings of the Imperial Hermitage and the Academy of Arts. To these very days the gifts represent a substantive contribution to the museum’s collection.
The opening of the museum was heartily welcomed by artists, collectors, and public figures, including artist Sverchkov, collectors Zvenigorodsky and the Tretyakovs, former Saratov governor Galkin-Vraska, and numerous Saratov residents. The first exposition of Western European art was called ‘the hall of old masters’.
Bogolyubov granted a valuable collection of contemporary European painting — landscapes of famous Dusseldorf painters Andreas and Oswald Ahenbakhovs, and of French masters close to the Barbizon school: Corot, Daubigny, Troyon, and Monticelli.
