Atlas of Tibetan medicine. Sheet 5. ‘Exegetical Tantra’
#3
The sheet illustrates the evolution of a human embryo.

The human body starts to form from the very beginning of pregnancy. Embryo appears as a result of the simultaneous interfusion of the father’s sperm, mother’s blood and the consciousness wandering in ‘bardo’ in womb at the moment of coitus. At the moment of impregnation sperm and blood should be healthy and the future creature’s karma should be in harmony with their parents’ karma.

There are four kinds of consciousness. The common man’s consciousness doesn’t remember the previous lives and doesn’t know the future ones when getting into the womb. Chakravarti’s (a world ruler’s) consciousness gets into the womb remembering the previous lives and knowing about the future ones, but then, during being in the womb, he forgets the knowledge. Bodhisattvas’ consciousness remembers their lives and loses them in the new body. Bodhisattvas of the higher level don’t lose their knowledge and choose the birthplace themselves. Their consciousness enters the future father’s mouth, then gets into his seed and along with it to the future mother’s womb. The impregnation itself may happen during the nine days after the end of the menstruation. If it happens at the odd day, the boy is born, if it happens at the even day, the girl is born.

The periods of fetus’ evolution starting from the first week and finishing with the 38th week are shown at the images. The fetus goes through three stages of formation:
1. The fish’s period finishes at the 9th week when the fetus’s limbs are not developed yet.
2. The turtle’s period finishes at the 17th week. By that time the bone system, limbs and the head shape are formed.
3. The pig’s period finishes at the 35th week. By that time the body is fully formed, but the consciousness is still shadowed.
During the rest three weeks the consciousness gets clear, the fetus gets unhappy with its place of stay. The child’s gender can be differed by the shape of the woman’s stomach. If it pushes out to the right, a boy will be born, if it pushes out to the left, a girl will be born, if it pushes out to the centre, an androgyne will be born, in case of both sides pushing out the twins will be born.

The last images depict the scenes of giving birth in the midst of experienced midwives and the careful servicing of a puerperant and a newborn child.
