Icons were painted by a famous iconographer of the second half of the 17th century Simeon Spirydonov Holmogorets. The painter came to Yaroslavl being already a skilled master and worked there a lot. Holmogorets came to be known as an artist of detailed painting: his works are distinguished by careful painting of small details. Simeon Spirydonov painted icons for many Yaroslavl churches. His works could be characterized by a combination of red and green tones with inserts of gold. On his icons, the master ornamented surfaces of buildings, tall arches and military armor with rich skillful golden patterns. Patterns made by the artist have no similar analogs in Yaroslavl icon painting of the last quarter of the 17th century.

Matthew the Evangelist with the Jesse Tree.
Sanctuary doors are the main doors of the altar-screen leading to the altar – the main part of an Orthodox church. Traditionally, four Evangelists and the Annunciation story line were depicted on their flaps. When painting the Sanctuary doors of the Church of Nicholas the Watery the painter looked up to ancient icons and engravings from the Piscator Bible from Holland. This book was not only popular for reading by wealthy people but also served as an important example for Russian masters. Icon painters found images and story lines for their works in the book. One such example: artists started to depict events from the Gospel Book and Evangelists who told about them. It is the story line of the Resurrection on the icon with Mark and the Jesse Tree on the icon with Matthew.

The Jesse Tree depicted by Mark the Evangelist is the list of ancestors of Jesus Christ from Abraham to Joseph. On the icon Matthew the Evangelist, a figure of Jesse, the father of King David, lying at the foot of the tree is depicted. Trunks and branches of geneology of Jesus Christ grow from him as if he was their root. The subject of the genealogical tree has been known in Russian art since the 15th century.
