Anthropologists have identified that Bronze Age people belonged to the Caucasian anthropological type. The average height was about 172 centimeters for men and 163 centimeters for women. The population did not suffer from hunger or severe physical overexertion. Some of the buried children show signs of earlier diseases, and some adults have traces of healed injuries, but overall the population was healthy.
Using materials from the BolshekaragAnsky burial ground and MikhaIl Gerasimov’s facial reconstruction method, anthropologist Alexey Nechvaloda reconstructed the appearance of a man and a woman.
The method is based on the fact that the skull’s muscles and skin are directly affected by the bone structure. First, the skull is carefully measured. Then skull features, dental abrasion, and the overgrowing of sutures are used to determine the person’s sex and age. The attachment sites of facial muscles are utilized to recreate a general outline of the face, its shape, and proportions. Then the nose, mouth, eyes, and ears are modeled. And finally, the sculpture gets an outfit and a haircut.
The sculptural facial reconstruction was performed using the skull of a young woman. The face is medium-wide and not very long, with pronounced brow ridges typical of the proto-Caucasian type. The hair is braided at the back, and on the forehead, there is a bandage with curved spiral-shaped temporal pendants. The deceased woman was of average height and in good health, and her skeleton has no signs of foul play that could lead to her death. The woman was not exposed to severe physical exertion and did not suffer from hunger. Her diet consisted of soft, protein-rich food.
She had been buried with plenty of grave goods, some of which were plundered in ancient times. At the burial site, archaeologists discovered metalwork attributes (a hammer, a splash of metal), handicraft tools, a set of arrowheads, and bones of sacrificial animals.
The second sculptural facial reconstruction was performed using the skull of a man who was about 25 years old. The face is medium-wide and not very long. The eye sockets are wide, the glabella and brow ridges are pronounced, and the nose prominently protrudes. The man’s long hair is slicked back and tied with a lace. The left ear is pierced. The burial site had also been plundered in ancient times, but archaeologists managed to find vessel fragments, items made of bone, an arrowhead, and animal bones.
