The life of Alexander Ivanovich Abrosimov, one of the oldest artists of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, was closely connected with this city and its ferry crossing, where he spent his childhood and youth.
The artist was born in 1930 in the Nizhny Lomov district of Penza Oblast. In 1934, his father, who was a laborer, was subjected to repression and exiled to the construction site of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, and a year later the whole Abrosimov family moved there to reunite with him. There, Alexander Abrosimov finished secondary school and then left for Vladivostok; after taking a course in diesel mechanics, he served on fishing boats for a while.
After returning home in 1949, he worked as a commercial artist while also studying at the art studio under Georgy Alexandrovich Tsivilyov. The latter recommended that his talented student take advanced studies. Alexander Abrosimov followed his advice and left the city of his youth again in 1953 to join an art school in Irkutsk.
After being assigned back to Komsomolsk-on-Amur, he started working at various art and creative studios, taught and painted quite a lot, preferring to do the latter from life. In 1964, he was nominated for the membership at the Artists’ Union of the USSR, officially joining the organization in 1984.
Abrosimov’s works are distinct for their multiple grounds and large dimensions, as well as the attentive and respectful attitude toward labor followed by the combination of subtle lyrical perception of nature and meticulous rendition of transitions in light and color.
Alexander Abrosimov spent around ten years working on the subject of the ferry crossing, and his endeavors resulted in the painting called “Ferries of Amur”. The sight of the hills on the horizon, the small motorboats almost entirely covered in snow and the vessels bound by ice were very familiar to the artist. Although it shows a cloudy day, the landscape is painted in soft lilac-gray-blue tones as if filled with light. The figures of people in gray winter clothes contrast with the majestic ferry boats resting on the river.
After the bridge had been built across the Amur River, the ferry crossing was no longer necessary, so the paintings by Alexander Abrosimov dedicated to it have become heritage objects of both culture and history.
