Fidlerman Yakov
Tobolsk Provincial Museum photo album

The photograph album presented at the exhibition in an embossed cardboard cover is a copy of the album that was presented on July 10, 1891 to Crown Prince Nikolai Aleksandrovich during his visit to the Tobolsk Provincial Museum. The artist made this inscription on the cover: ‘Copy of Tobolsk Museum album’. The copy was made at the same time as the original, especially for the museum.

One of the photographs from the album that was gifted
The album itself was ordered in Moscow. When it arrived, ten photographs were pasted on his ten sheets, depicting the exhibits and departments of the museum: natural history, ethnographic, archaeological, industrial, and general education. The photographs for the album were taken by Yakov Fidlerman (1884–1893), a member of the Tobolsk petty bourgeoisie who owned a photography studio in the city.

Tobolsk governor Vladimir Troinitskiy personally gave the photography album to Crown Prince Nikolai Aleksandrovich. In his memoirs, Troinitskiy wrote this about the event: ‘The Museum Librarian, captain S.N. Mameyev, presented 7 Tobolsk edition books that were related to the Museum. His Highness bestowed upon the curator of the Museum, N.A. Lytkin, golden cufflinks adorned with stones, and a ring with precious gemstones upon librarian Mameyev…’

The photograph of the original album
The museum has kept a photograph of the original album, which clearly shows its silver cover with engraved floral and ribbon ornamentation, and a coat of arms. In the center of the lid, the artisan placed an oval with inscriptions around a circle, and in the oval is an image of the Tobolsk Provincial Museum.

During a tour around the Tobolsk Museum, Crown Prince Nikolai Aleksandrovich took an interest in its collections. In the first hall, the successor to the throne took note of the skeleton of a dead bull, and the bones of some ancient animals. In one room, he noticed a gold-plated silver goblet with Russian kvass (fermented bread drink): this was an old, rounded vessel to drink from as it was passed around in a circle during feasts. When the Crown Prince desired to try the kvass, they brought him the drink on a silver tray, and in a silver mug that had the inscription: ‘Beer is nothing surprising, honey is not a blessing, the main thing is that love is precious’.

A showcase with ancient Russian artifacts in the archeology hall drew the attention of the Crown Prince. A medallion owned by Princess Maria Dolgorukova (Menshikova), who was betrothed to Emperor Peter II Alekseyevich. The guest also struck the alarm bell from Uglich that was mounted in the museum: in 1592 it was exiled to Tobolsk for helping incite unrest, but before that they yanked out its ‘tongue’ (clapper), cut off its ‘ear’ (canon), and smote it with 12 lashes.
