A contemporary artist Igor Tokarev created his painting Martyrs of Alapayevsk for the centenary of the day of the tragic death of members of the House of Romanov in Alapayevsk. Along with their companions they were killed and thrown down a mineshaft on 18 July 1918.

Tokarev’s piece resembles a fresco. The saint martyrs are looking at us. Viewers immediately lock eyes with them. The figures form a triangle and that makes the viewer a participant in action.
The angel’s hands are hold against the chest — that is a sign of revelation.
The sky-blue colour of the background symbolizes purity and sainthood; the golden rays emanating from the image of the Theotokos symbolize the radiance of the divine glory in which the saints are.

Elizaveta Fyodorovna is in the center of the painting. The artist used a photo from 1912 to portray her face. He depicted the Grand Duchess in the festive vestment of the Red Cross sister and of the Mother Superior of the Convent of Saints Martha and Mary with a golden cross in her hand. The other figures on the painting are: Varvara Yakovleva, the lay sister of Elizaveta Fyodorovna; the royal blood dukes Johannes Konstantinovich, Igor Konstantinovich and Konstantin Konstantinovich junior; the Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich and his secretary Fyodor Remez; prince Vladimir Paley. They are depicted in an officer’s ceremonial uniforms of the Russian Imperial Army. When the artist was painting the picture, he did not have an exact description or photo documents portraying the servant of the Grand Duke Fyodor Remez. The artist created his image on the picture according to contemporaries’ description.

The prisoners spent almost two months incarcerated in the Napolnaya School. On the night of 17-18 July 1918 they were martyred at an abandoned mineshaft 11 verstas from Alapayevsk. Now there is a monastery at this place erected in honor of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russian Church. Each year during the Royal Days they have a procession of the Cross in memory of the feat of the Alapayevsk martyrs.
In the fall of 1918, during the investigation regarding the murder of the Imperial House members, the White Movement authorities found their bodies and were able to send the coffins with the remains of the Alapayevsk martyrs to Beijing. In 1921, the remains of the Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fyodorovna and Varvara Yakovleva were brought to Jerusalem. After World War II, communists came to power in China and destroyed all the Orthodox churches, so the bodies of the other martyrs are still considered lost. On November 1, 1981, Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia canonized the martyrs of Alapayevsk (all, except for Fyodor Remez).
The painting was commissioned by the Urals community in Moscow and was granted to the museum Napolnaya School in the town of Alapayevsk as a present on July 18, 2018. Igor Tokarev, the author and member of the International Artistic Foundation, was born in 1967 in Ryazan. He received his higher education as a production designer, his paintings are found in private collections both in Russia and abroad. Currently, Igor Tokarev works on Christian and historic themes.
