Eisenstein personally met the actor Chojuro Kawarasaki (1902 - 1981) in 1928 when the ‘Kabukiza’ troupe toured in Moscow. Kawarasaki is showing the famous technique of ‘slanted eyes.’ Kabuki actors, learning this technique, did not know why anger was portrayed in this way.
