The fresco depicts the composition of the Akathist to the Holy Virgin (Kontakion 11): ‘Every hymn is defeated that trieth to encompass the multitude of Thy many compassions; for if we offer to Thee, O Holy King, songs equal in number to the sand, nothing have we done worthy of that which Thou hast given us who shout to Thee: Alleluia! ’. On the background of the single-domed church, Jesus Christ is depicted with the Gospel in his left hand and the prelates facing him, led by the holy Fathers of the Church: Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian. In the heavens above them there are the angels who glorify the Lord.

The Akathist Hymn is one of the most well-loved services of devotion in the Orthodox Church. The Akathist to the Holy Virgin is a praise hymn in Her honor, composed in Byzantium between the 5th and 7th centuries. In the Russian tradition of authorship is attributed to Venerable Roman the Melodist (6th century). The cycle of illustrations of Akathist is traditionally included in the decoration system of the Virgin temples and temples dedicated to other people and events. In ancient Russian monumental painting of the 16th–17th centuries, it is often adjacent to the cycle of the Protoevangelium of James.
