The book Ahmed-bai was written by Bashkir and Tatar writer and educator Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov and centers around the life of the famous Tatar merchant and philanthropist Ahmed-bai Husainov.
Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov was born in the village of Kichuchatovo in the Samara province in 1859 and studied at a local Muslim educational institution. He published his first book, The Book on Morphology, in 1887. Three years later, Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov moved to Ufa, where he served as a judge in a Spiritual Assembly; soon he received the title of Akhund - the highest scholastic degree among Muslims. The writer advocated the strengthening of ties between Muslims of different countries and made a significant contribution to the development of culture of the peoples of the Urals and the Volga region.
The book Ahmed-bai is dedicated to the educational and philanthropic activities of Ahmed-bai Husainov, it tells about his life and hard work. Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov sincerely admired this hardworking man, ‘known for his zeal and diligence’. As the author writes: ‘He was neither a scientist nor a philosopher, he was even illiterate, unable to write his name. At the same time, he was intelligent, pious and a patriot of his nation. He did a great deed for the children of his nation. He differed from other illiterates precisely in this’.
In his work, Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov describes the history of development of Kargaly – the settlement twenty kilometers from Orenburg where Ahmed-bai was born and spent his childhood. The author tells about Orenburg itself, the family of the hero, his first steps, difficulties and hardships on the road to wealth. But most importantly, he narrates about how Ahmed-bai disposed of the money he earned, spent it on charitable deeds and how he himself came to God.
In addition to the biography of the famous philanthropist, Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov raises in his small but very deep work burning problems and complex issues on the prospects for the nation development. He discusses how to maintain unity and faith, how to learn from other nations and apply their experience to improve his fellow citizens’ life. In the book, the author emphasizes that Ahmed-bai borrowed a lot from other peoples and introduced innovations among the Tatars in order to better their life, but, unfortunately, he was not always understood in his native land.
The book Ahmed-bai is an important historical document that helps to take a closer look at the life and traditions of the Tatars, and, of course, is of value not only for historians but also for everyone who is interested in the culture of peoples living in Russia.
