“The Avraamy Zavenyagin” is currently the only nuclear-powered icebreaker on the Yenisey River equipped for river navigation. She was named in honor of Avraamy Pavlovich Zavenyagin, who was the first director at the Norilsk Nickel Plant.

The icebreaker was built at a Finnish shipyard and launched in 1984. Her design features (the additional propeller, low deckhouse, folding mast) ensure low draft at high power, allowing the vessel to operate in shallow water and pass under power lines and bridges.

The icebreaker is just over 76 meters long, 16.5 meters wide, and 4.6 meters high, with a 2.5-meter landing. “The Zavenyagin” is almost four times smaller in size than “The Yermak”, Russia’s first Arctic icebreaker.

Four river icebreakers operated on the Yenisey River in the Soviet Union, although by the late 1990s two remained — “The Avraamy Zavenyagin” and “The Kapitan Metsayk” (transferred to the Caspian Sea).

“The Zavenyagin’s” tasks are different at different times of the year. In autumn and winter, the icebreaker is to create an approach channel in the port of Dudinka for seagoing vessels. In spring, just before the ice drifts, “The Zavenyagin” breaks through the ice to allow ships to leave the port and sail to a safe location. In summer navigation she is to escort ships in caravans on the tributaries of the Yenisey River, which requires the calculation of the time of rising water, sufficient for the passage of the loaded barges. And the year-round task is to participate in rescue operations.

The navigational charts of the Yenisey River are constantly updated due to changing conditions, and the crew of “The Zavenyagin” has to consider new amendments every season.

As a rescue ship, the icebreaker has repeatedly come to the aid of fishermen and vessels in distress who failed to anchor for the winter and were trapped in the ice.

In 1995, “The Zavenyagin” was involved in rescuing the polar explorers of Dixon: she escorted a tanker with a reserve of diesel fuel to the right place, which saved the people from freezing.

In 1998, the village of Khatanga was in a similar situation, and again a rescue icebreaker led the vessels of the tanker fleet of the Khatanga Commercial Port from Cape Kosisty to the site of the emergency. Many crew members received government awards.

The model was created for the opening of the new exhibition in 2011.
