The exhibition “Taimyr: Past and Present” displays the most striking and interesting monuments of the history of the Taimyr Peninsula. Unique exhibits are related to the beliefs of indigenous peoples and their ancient cult: idols, ritual masks, and costume sets belonging to shamans.
The ethnographic collection is a source of pride for the Taimyr Local History Museum. It consists of decorative and applied art objects reflecting the artistic world of the Nenets, Nganasans, Dolgans, Evenks, and other minority peoples. This important source base allows immersing into the traditional culture of Arctic ethnic groups, learning about their life in the past and about what material and spiritual changes were brought in their life during the Soviet and post-Soviet years. Ethnographic exhibits include items of national clothing, toys, the annual “paskaal” calendar, and many more objects.
Graphical and pictorial works by Taimyr artists are of historical and artistic interest. The Nganasan Motyumyaku Sochupteevich Turdagin, Dolgans Boris Nikolayevich Molchanov and Andrey Arkadyevich Porotov devoted their work to the life and culture of tundra inhabitants and materials describing the life and work of art people. The works of other artists — Sergey Morozov and Andrey Kimovich Dorogin — are dedicated to the Soviet period Taimyr, including the tragic pages of history.
The exhibition also features modern models of legendary ships, a collection of national awards, and the work of taxidermists.
