The history of the Russian countryside manors begins in the second half of the 18th century. Since their residents were servicemen, provincial manors normally stayed empty as late as the reign of Peter the Great. They only came to their estates for short periods of time. Noblemen only got a chance to settle in their manors for good once they reached old age and retired.
The collection on display showcases the life in estates during its heyday. Many of the exhibits are connected to prominent military and political figures.
