The hall of Russian religious art of the 13th — early 18th centuries is one of the most interesting sections of the permanent exposition of the Radishchev Art Museum in Saratov.
The collection of Christian antiquities was started in 1885, when the museum was opened. The founder of the museum Alexey Petrovich Bogolyubov and his contemporaries donated the first exhibits. The museum staff continued collecting religious objects in the 20th century, and art history expeditions around Saratov brought new exhibits.
Now the Radishchev Art Museum houses more than 1,500 monuments of Orthodox culture. There are exhibits made by masters of the leading Old Russian icon painting schools. These are icons of Moscow, Novgorod, Rostov, Murom and Yaroslavl workshops. Paintings are complemented by liturgical items made of various materials: silver and copper alloys, bone, wood and mother-of-pearl. The museum also displays items from an extensive collection of manuscripts and early printed books. The exhibition demonstrates the stages of development and artistic achievements of Russian art in the pre-Petrine era.
