The celebrated Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov was born and grew up in Ufa, took first steps in art here and went to study painting in Moscow. He remained in touch with his native place to his dying day. Here, he painted his famous canvases: the Hermit in 1889; Apparition to St. Bartholomew, as a Boy in 1890, and the best known one, The Amazon, Portrait of O.M. Nesterova.
The Museum’s collection includes 109 paintings by Mikhail Nesterov and is rightly considered to be one of the largest in Russia, and each of its exhibits is a cultural highpoint.
The pre-revolution period is of special significance in Mikhail Nesterov’s artwork. It is in that period that the artist developed his moral and esthetic program centered on the unity of man and nature. He was convinced that it is only far from civilization that the human soul may be purified and rejuvenated. The man would return to his Creator only if he leads a ‘secluded life’.
