The mission of the Taimyr Local History Museum was to study “the history of the peoples inhabiting the region, exploration of the Northern Sea Route, socialism building, cultural development of the peoples of Taimyr”, as well as the protection of natural and cultural monuments.
The modern museum building, designed by the Krasnoyarsk architect Andrey Viktorovich Kuritsyn, was put in commission in 2009.
The exhibition hall, located on the ground floor, shows works by graphic artists and painters, sculptors, and wood and bone carvers. Exhibitions provided by other museums and collectors are also displayed here.
The “Nature and Culture” section, gives visitors an insight into the flora and fauna of Taimyr. Works by taxidermists — a stuffed reindeer, polar wolf, and arctic fox — attract visitors’ attention. A unique paleontological complex “Sopkarginsky mammoth” is also presented there.
Genuine archaeological finds and restored items tell the story of the culture of the first inhabitants of Taimyr, who explored the territory more than 8,000–10,000 years ago. The ethnographic exhibits describe the cultural heritage of the five indigenous ethnic groups of Taimyr: Dolgans, Nganasans, Nenets, Evenks, and Enets.
Such unique exhibits, as cult objects of small peoples — amulets, idols, and shamanic costumes — are of particular interest to the visitors. They have no analogs in any other museum in the world.
The “Civilisation” section is dedicated to the history of Taimyr exploration from the 17th century to the present day. The Soviet period is represented by documents, photographs, and authentic objects.
The museum library has a rich collection of documents, some of which exist in a single copy. The museum staff maintains contact with Russian research centers, archives, and scientists.
Today, the Taimyr Local History Museum is not just a historical center, but also part of the cultural life of the town, the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets Municipal District, and Krasnoyarsk Territory.
