The permanent exhibition ‘From Seashells to Banknotes: The History of Money’ is found in the Karasuksky Regional Museum’s Numismatics room. It is an interactive exhibition showing the history of Russian money — from Ivan the Terrible to the modern day. The collection includes everything from light silver kopeks called ‘cheshuykas’ from the 17th century Russia, heavy 19th century copper coins and imperial medals to Soviet-era money. Each exhibit has a story to tell — how it was found, studied, found in catalogs and how its age and value were calculated. It is possible to trace how, over time, coins became smaller and cheaper, the metals and alloys from which they were made changed and how this was influenced by the social and military upheavals and reforms of the day.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
