903-904 are considered to be the date of formation of the state Volga Bulgaria when the Bulgarian ruler Eltember Almush minted the first coins. In 922 Almush declared Islam the state religion in Volga Bulgaria and became the vassal of the Baghdad Caliph. In the first half of the 13th century, Bulgaria was attacked by Mongolian troops, who looted and burned the local villages. However, it was the Mongols who built new cities, which embodied the achievements of architecture and technology of the Golden Horde.
The exhibition ‘History of the Civilization of Volga Bulgars’ presents authentic archaeological finds from that era: ceramic and glass vessels, sophisticated bronze jewelry, copper jugs, simple and compound locks, weapons and household items.
