Appearance of The Holy Mother to Blessed Sergius of Radonezh
#2
The Blessed Sergius of Radonezh is a Christian saint and founder of several monasteries in Rus. The appearance of the Theotokos to him in the Trinity Lavra near Moscow is described in Venerable’s hagiography. In accordance with the text, Sergius anticipated this and told his follower Micah: Be sober and don’t fall asleep child. A miraculous and horrifying vision is coming. After that, he went out from his monastic cell and The Holy Mother Ashine with apostles Peter and Paul appeared before him. The Holy Mother told him that she will patronize the Trinity monastery.

The oldest depiction of this event is stored in The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. It is inflicted on a non-altar cross made by Ambrose in the 15th century. The Appearance of The Holy Mother to Sergius of Radonezh was also depicted on border scenes. Border scenes are small additional pictures that surround the central part of the icon. Also this scene was often depicted on images for pilgrims: the religious took home such icons with them after visiting the monastery. During the Patriotic War of 1812 Emperor Alexander I blessed the Moscow militia with the icon Appearance of The Holy Mother to Blessed Sergius of Radonezh painted on the grave board of the Saint.

About icon

#4
The icon from the collection of the Rybinsk Museum Reserve was created in the end of 18th – beginning of 19th centuries by Moscow icon painters. In 1816, the governor of the Moscow eparchy archbishop Augustin presented the icon to Count Alexey Musin-Pushkin for his housewarming when he moved into his new mansion in Razgulyay Square in Moscow. The reverse side of the icon has a memorial inscription: Blessing of Eminent Augustin for the housewarming of Count Alexey Ivanovich Musin-Pushkin. Moscow. September 27, 1816.
#5
The icon is executed with oil paints in the Frankish style. Such was the name for icon painting that followed the style of Western European images. Usually such icons were influenced by secular baroque art with dimensional realistic silhouettes, vibrant colours and one-point perspective.
#6
At the upper part of the icon in its celestial segment the icon painters depicted The New Testament Trinity of the iconographic type Synthronus. It is different from The Old Testament Trinity in the fact that instead of three angels it depicts Jesus Christ, God the Father as an elder and the Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove.

Musin-Pushkin took the icon into his Borisogleb estate not far away from Rybinsk. The icon was kept in the estate until the Revolution when it was transferred to the museum. Today, the waters of the Rybinsk water reservoir submerse these places. Builders dismantled the house so it does not interfere with navigation.
