This is a pennant that signifies IshimbAy’s honorary title of a “City of Labor Valor and Glory” that was bestowed upon it by the Interstate Union of Hero Cities. This significant event took place in 2016 to honor the wartime feats of Ishimbay oil workers. However, a lot of preparatory work had to be done before the city could received the well-deserved title.
It all began on February 10, 2010, when Vladimir IgnAtiev, the founder and director of the Ishimbay Museum of History and Local Lore, spoke at a solemn meeting dedicated to the city’s 65th anniversary. He spoke about the incredible contribution made by oil drillers, machine builders, construction workers, and other workpeople of Ishimbay during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, with Ishimbay’s tank and aircraft fuel being the most significant factor in the victory over the enemy. His speech about the need for a state-wide recognition of Ishimbay’s contribution to the Great Victory was met with a round of applause. Since then, the Ishimbay Museum established the Organizing Committee, which made contact with a number of relevant committees, as well as other cities that applied for this title. Six years later, all this work resulted in Ishimbay being granted the honorary title of a ‘City of Labor Valor and Glory.’
For the 2017 City Day, the Ishimbay Museum of History and Local Lore published the first issue of the almanac ‘Ishimbayskiy Vestnik’, which is dedicated to the city’s local lore. The almanac contained an article by Engel Zainetdinov, a famous Doctor of Economics, Honored Economist of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Academician of the International Academy of Ecology and Life Protection Sciences, member of the Presidium of Bashneft’s Veterans' Council, as well as the author of many articles and a number of books on the history of the oil industry of the Soviet Union and the Republic of Bashkortostan. Titled ‘The Firstborn Oil City of Bashkortostan’, his article gives a detailed account of the ceremony where Ishimbay was awarded the honorary title.
Zainetdinov noted that the decree on awarding Ishimbay the title was signed by the Chairman of the Presidium of the Interstate Union of Hero Cities, Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, pilot cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko, on July 19, 2016. On this occasion, the city held solemn events on the City Day, August 29, 2016, where the award was presented to the city’s administration by Twice Hero of Socialist Labor Vladimir Yarygin. “Such honor was previously bestowed upon the cities of Chelyabinsk, Magnitogorsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Severodvinsk, Cherepovets, Volkhov, Zakamensk, Elektrostal, and Korolyov. Along with Ishimbay, this honorary title was also awarded to the cities of Zlatoust, Ulan-Ude, and Fryazino. It is worth noting that Ishimbay is the only city in the republic to be awarded such an honor. Ishimbay”s contribution to the Great Victory is duly appreciated, ” summarizes Zainetdinov.
