There is a strong romantic sense in Isabey’s paintings. The motifs of the stairway leading into an ancient castle and of processions in the castle are frequently used in his art works from the 1850s. In this period he explored subjects from the “old times.” Historical accuracy was not among his priorities, and sometimes it is hard to tell what historical period is reflected in an art work. Isabey’s exquisite artistic techniques are instrumental for transforming a canvas into a fairytale scene.
