The Ural artist Yevgeny Mosin painted his landscapes in “the austere style”. Despite losing its relevance and popularity in the 1980s, the style remained central in Mosin’s oeuvre with the painting “Spring in Sergi” being a vivid example of that.

The monumental composition with its vibrant color scheme strives to convey the scale and grandeur of nature. As a subject, the artist chose the city of Nizhniye Sergi in Sverdlovsk Oblast, located on the western slope of the Ural Mountains. There, in the 18th century, a workers’ settlement was established on the right bank of the Serga River, one of the tributaries of the Ufa River. Like many Ural cities, it appeared due to the metallurgical production founded by Nikita Nikitich Demidov. Surrounded by the mountains, the settlement was gradually growing and expanding next to the facilities of a large factory.

The painting by Yevgeny Mosin depicts one of these large mountains called Bolnichnaya. The right side shows industrial pipes (now non-existent) emitting smoke at the mountain’s foot. A high horizon line opens up a view of the mountain with the river and its nearest bank in the foreground.

In 1840, a spring of mineral water was discovered in the western part of the city, and a spa resort was opened in Nizhniye Sergi. Today it is the oldest Ural resort. This area is considered the most environmentally friendly in the Urals, no planes are allowed to fly over it. The surroundings of the resort are called “Ural Switzerland”. The local treatment is based on the famous sodium chloride mineral water. It was first mentioned in the early 18th century, and a century later locals began to use it for medical purposes. In the mid-19th century, by order of the Chief Head of Mining Plants named after Vladimir Glinka, a balneary was established there.

The Olenyi Ruchyi park opened in 1999 in the Nizhneserginsky district is yet another tourist attraction. Its area counts over a hundred square kilometers. The flora and fauna of the park are very diverse and are of great interest to visitors. The territory of the Olenyi Ruchyi served as the main filming set of the movie “Huntsman” starring Igor Lifanov.
