Arnold Bocklin’s Spring (Songs of Spring) was painted in Florence. It is one of the Swedish artist’s landscapes that depict singing and playing models. Figures of three girls symbolizing the awakening of nature organize the space rhythmically around the blossoming meadow. While resembling exciting images of Botticelli, they also create the sense of a beautiful but sad vision relevant to the modern age. Subconsciously feeling their awakening power, the characters are brought back to life from their half-dreaming state. The delicate drawing and the sophisticated and exquisite colors of the painting, in combination with the frame made by the artist himself, anticipate the quest of Art Nouveau – a style that emerged at the turn of the 20th century.
