One of the constant motifs in Redon’s works was a stout tree that appeared in his painting Spring. This ancient symbol was often interpreted as a sign of constantly regenerating nature and immortality. Combined with the flowers and the nude female figure, this motif became a sophisticated artistic image that can be linked to the idea of Maurice Maeterlinck, who wrote that trees and flowers “give an example of all great spiritual movements: due resistance, peaceful courage, the impulse to go higher, modest significance, silent victory, and permanence.” The almost monochromatic color scheme of the painting strengthens its hypnotic influence, bringing it closer to music in its impact on the viewer.
