Since the beginning of the air raids on London, Red Cross nurses have escorted nearly 16,000 women and children evacuated to Paddington Station. In buses and trains, they were carried to the safe countryside. Many of these twenty volunteer nurses rendered the same service at the beginning of 1940, when mothers with babies, schoolchildren as well as pregnant women were sent to the countryside following the official evacuation plan.
