The fresco illustrates the text of the Gospel Song of Mary, whose words were spoken by the Virgin Mary when she met righteously with Elizabeth. With the addition to each verse of the chorus ‘The Honest Cherubim…’ written by Cosma of Maiuma, this hymn is performed daily in the morning between the 8th and 9th songs of the canon. The complex multi-figure composition of the stage has a great resemblance to the icon of the same name from the Church of St. Nicholas Rublin in Yaroslavl. Such images of the gymnographic content have been especially popular in Russian icon painting since the middle of the 16th century. Each line of the hymn corresponds to a certain image, and the entire composition as a whole represents a solemn praise of the Lord and his blessings.
