The German drawing artist and painter Adolf von Menzel was an apprentice to his father, a lithography master. They lived in Berlin, and Adolf studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts for a short period of time. Later, he worked as an applied graphics master. He created labels, posters, and illustrations for art books. At the same time, he studied drawing by himself and made his first attempts at oil painting. He did a great deal of traveling around Europe. In 1867 he was already a well-known painter in Germany, and he went to Paris to participate in the World Exhibition. His Parisian themes were a simple genre scene or a low-key subject against the backdrop of a landscape. He often resorted to this type of simple motif. Recollection of the Luxembourg Gardens is a painting from his later years, when von Menzel paid a lot of attention to rendering lighting effects – he created an entire series of studies filled with light and an airy atmosphere. The techniques and artistic style are evidence of the influence that contemporary French impressionists had on the German talent. The central group in the painting brings to mind the typical staffage in Renoir paintings. This art work has one of the most delicate palettes in the entire legacy of this brilliant artist.
