Certificate of registration of Alexey Zmeyev in the Book of Honor of the CC ALYCL (Central Committee of All-Union Leninist Young Communist League)
The Book of Honor of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League registered people, or organizations who won a socialist competition, set a labor record, contributed to scientific and technological progress or helped develop science, culture, and sports, as well as those who received recognition for their activities and took an active part in combat battles and in public life. Those who were included in the Book of Honor were given a badge and a certificate.
Alexey Zmeyev was born in Anzhero-Sudzhensk, in 1948. In 1965, he graduated from the eighth grade of school No. 20, after which he went to work at the glass factory as a containers maker. Later, he was transferred to the machine shop of the glass factory, where he worked with onboard devices of vertical glass pulling.
In June 1967, Zmeyev was drafted into the Soviet Army. He served in Primorsky Territory, on the Soviet-Chinese border, and took part in the armed conflict on Damansky Island: Chinese military units invaded the island and tried to seize it. The USSR lost 58 servicemen in the fighting, while the People’s Republic of China lost about 99 men.
Alexey Zmeyev was among the fallen Soviet soldiers — he was killed on March 2, 1969, when he was defending the state border. On that day, the Chinese attacked the Soviet border guards, and the Zmeyev’s unit was alerted. He had just finished his duties for the day, and could have stayed in the barracks. However, Alexey decided that his comrades needed his help and went with the first car to the site of the raid.
Zmeyev was wounded in the leg during the battle, but he continued to fight until the very last minute. Bleeding to death, he tried to help his Krasnoyarsk friend — dragging him to the shelter. However, both fighters were killed. Posthumously, Alexey Zmeyev was awarded the medal ‘For Valor’, and an obelisk was erected at the outpost, where he served, in memory of those killed on the Damansky Island. The fishing trawler — a fishing vessel for catching fish — was named after Zmeyev.
On May 19, 1991, the island was ceded without a fight to the Chinese. When it was recognized as part of the PRC, the Chinese authorities backfilled the channel, and the area has been part of the Chinese coast ever since.
