A tobacco pipe is a device used for smoking specially prepared and chopped tobacco. The pipe was the most common accessory of the smoker until the middle of the 20th century. Later it was strongly pushed back by cigarettes. Valerian Frolov, commander of the Karelian Front in the period from September 1941 to February 1944, was an avid smoker.

Georgy Veshchezersky was the commander of the 52nd Rifle Division, which distinguished itself in battle in the Murmansk direction of the Karelian Front. He later served as deputy commander of the 32nd army of the Karelian Front. This is how he recalled Frolov:

I was called to the commander of the army, Lieutenant General Valerian Frolov. We go way back. Frolov greeted me warmly. I haven’t seen him for several years yet he didn’t seem to have changed much, except he gained some weight and his hair got a bit thinner. He was still twitching his head and shoulder (effects of the concussion he got fighting the Polish whites in 1920) and almost constantly smoked or simply puffed on an unlit pipe with a long mouthpiece. There was a whole collection of pipes in his desk drawer, with which he never parted. Frolov has always made a very good impression on me. With his subordinates, he was always reserved and polite, very attentive and caring towards people. Mellow and cautious, he never disregarded the opinion of his juniors.

The pipe from the collection mentioned by Georgy Veshchezersky is now in the collection of the Karelian Front Museum. This is a classic straight pipe with a cylindrical wooden bowl and a wooden stummel, its stem (mouthpiece) is made of plastic. A metal cleaning tip is attached to the mouthpiece. Closer to the intersection of the mouthpiece and the stummel, there is an inscription “Glavtabak Moscow V. S. No. 2”. This inscription reveals where and when the pipe was purchased by the commander: in the Glavtabak pavilion of VDNH in Moscow. Frolov could have bought it after his mission in Spain and before the beginning of the Winter War of 1939–1940 which coincides with the time the first pavilion in VDNH was built in 1937–1939.

After the war, the pipe was kept for a long time in the Museum of Military Glory at the House of Officers in Petrozavodsk, from there it was transferred to the National Museum of the Republic of Karelia, and now it is stored in the Karelian Front Museum, where the headquarters of the Karelian Front were located and Valerian Alexandrovich served.
