Emil Nolde is one of the most prominent German expressionists. He was born into a peasant family and became a worker at a furniture factory. The master turned to serious painting rather late. His talent was soon revealed and highly rated by his contemporaries. In 1906, the artist joined “The Bridge” group. Later, he took an active part in exhibitions held by “The Blue Rider” group. Bold in his treatment of color and contrast, Nolde became famous as a master of colorfully expressive compositions and was recognized as one of the best colorists among expressionists. The watercolor technique was his favorite, and he applied it masterfully. Not afraid of experimentation, Nolde often worked with splotches and wet smears of local colors, thus creating bright visual effects. This painting is from the master’s mature period and fully demonstrates his talent as a watercolorist: the contrasting colorful spots and saturated colors make the female characters more expressive and create inner tension at the same time.
