Hans von Marees was a contemporary of impressionists, but he did not aim to capture and express the variability of nature. Rather, he oriented himself around the standards of classic art. Inspired by antiquity and monumental paintings made by Italian Renaissance masters, he tried to bring the grand style back to life in the 19th century, thus acting as a precursor of Art Nouveau. Three nude putti were once a part of a composition that included four monumental paintings: “The Garden of the Hesperides, " “The Judgement of Paris, " and the two compositions titled “The Golden Age.” According to the artist’s intention, all of the compositions had to be placed in a huge painted decorative frame. The figures of the nude putti were designed to be placed in the lower part of the frame on the sides of each scene in various poses. Each of them was painted on a separate vertical board.
