Saint Nicholas of Myra, also known as Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, is one of the most revered Christian saints.He used to be an archbishop in the Roman city of Myra in the third century AD and, according to his hagiography, he cured the sick and saved condemned innocent people from the execution. Saint Nicholas of Myra suffered for the Faith during the severe Anti-Christian persecution of the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian.
The cult of Saint Nicholas of Myra spread just after his death, in the fourth century AD. In ancient Rus’, the saint’s image appeared for the first time in Kiev. The most ancient of the icons that survived until now is also in Kiev, in St. Sophia’s Cathedral.
In iconography, there are three main types of images of St. Nicholas of Myra: two of them represent him full length; these icons are called Saint Nicholas of Mozhaisk and Saint Nicholas of Zaraisk. The third type is a half-length icons of Saint Nicholas.
