“The Holy Trinity” based on the iconographic type “The Hospitality of Abraham” is a unique depiction of the traditional subject in Russian art. Firstly, the icon is elongated vertically, with a figured top, which looks unusual. This suggests that the icon was intended for a Baroque iconostasis — a complex architectural structure where painting, sculpture, and gilded carving played an equally significant role.

The icon painter drew inspiration from a Western European print by Adriaen Collaert (1560–1618) based on a drawing by Maerten de Vos (1532–1603). It was printed in Piskator’s Bible which was popular among Russian icon painters and was published several times in the mid-to-late 17th century. Not only the general composition and poses but also numerous details were borrowed from the original print. For example, the two vessels with water in the foreground and the sandals at the feet of one of the angels illustrate the 4th verse of the 18th chapter of the Book of Genesis, where Abraham says,

The castle at the top of the mountain with the Cave of Machpelah resembles the actual architectural complex called the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

“The Appearance of Three Angels to Abraham” or “The Hospitality of Abraham” appeared in early Christian art, such as 4th-century Roman catacombs on the Via Latina (Latin Road). Three young men, dressed in tunics and Roman cloaks, approach Abraham, who is sitting under a tree. Various episodes from Abraham’s life were depicted in miniature illustrations in manuscripts from the 6th century, as well as in illustrations in the Book of Psalms from the 9th to the 17th centuries. Since the 16th century, Old Testament stories, including Abraham’s story, have been represented in Russian mural paintings, as well as in the border scenes of the icons of the Holy Trinity with Acts.

The bright colors, lively poses, and abundant decorative elements convey the joyful and enthusiastic view of life typical of the Rococo style that was popular in Saint Petersburg and Moscow in the second quarter and the middle of the 18th century.
