The exhibition features a painting by Yakov Fyodorovich Kapkov who specialized in history paintings, genre scenes, and portraits.

He studied under the guidance of the painter Karl Pavlovich Bryullov who represented late Russian classicism of the first half of the 19th century.

“The Pool of Siloam” by Yakov Kapkov was transferred to the Pskov Museum from the Museum of the Academy of Arts in 1930. The composition is based on the story of the healing miracles performed by Jesus at the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem. It is described in the Gospel of John,

#5

Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of invalid folk — blind, halt, withered — waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water. Whosoever then first stepped in, after the troubling of the water, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

#6

The Gospel of John also includes the story of how Jesus healed a blind man,

#7
And as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from his birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, ‘Master, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? ’ Jesus answered, ‘Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of Him that sent Me while it is day; the night cometh when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.’ When He had thus spoken, He spat on the ground and made clay with the spittle; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay and said unto him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which interpreted means, ‘Sent’). He went his way therefore and washed, and came back seeing.

Legend has it that the Pool of Siloam received water from the Fountain of the Virgin, a spring located higher on the western slope of the Kidron Valley. The name derives from the legend that Mary came there to draw water with other women.

This religious painting was painted in the style of academic art. The multi-figured composition is thought out and detailed. The artist paid great attention to the line that smoothly brings all the characters together, integrating them into a single composition. All faces are characterized by distinct features and emotions. The study for this painting is housed by the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan.
