Thanks to Pavel Bazhov’s fairy tale of the same name, the malachite box became one of the most popular Ural souvenirs. The collection of the Museum of Stone-Cutting and Jewelry Art History includes more than 20 jewelry boxes of different shapes and sizes. The largest box is mounted on four bronze legs which resemble lion paws.

This rectangular jewelry box has a hinged lid and can be locked with a key. The keyhole of the inner lock is decorated with an ornamental diamond-shaped metal plate. The lid is embellished along the edges with a bronze strip which has a stamped pattern in the form of small beads. Inside the jewelry box is lined with satin.

Jewelry was usually stored in such boxes.

And there are, listen, all sorts of women’s accessories. Earrings, rings and so on, which not every rich bride has…
Pavel Bazhov described the contents of the box, which was given by the Mistress of the Copper Mountain to master Stepan in one of the fairy tales

In the late 19th — early 20th century, jewelry stores in Yekaterinburg did sell jewelry sets made of malachite. They included rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, a pendant, a hat clip, a powder case, and a snuffbox. There were special rules for making these items, which were followed by Yekaterinburg artisans. For example, the stones for rings were ground in the form of cabochons — one side of them was flat, and the other was smooth and convex. This form emphasized the color of the stone and smooth transitions of tones.

Malachite earrings were made light so that they would not pull down the earlobes. Therefore, usually, masters chose small thin plates of stone and complemented them with an openwork metal frame. Pins for hats, on the contrary, were made heavy so that they would hold well on top of hats. A polished piece of malachite was fixed on a strong metal spoke.

The jewelry set also included two necklaces — a long and a short one. Small beads in them had a diameter of 5 to 6 millimeters, large ones — up to one and a half centimeters. However, not everyone could wear such beads: malachite was quite heavy and cold to the touch. Therefore, sometimes they were replaced in the set with pendants or brooches.
