A significant place in the collection of the Samples Museum and in the assortment of the Crafts Store was occupied by items made according to artist’s Vladimir Sokolov designs. A graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he studied under the tutorship of such famous painters as Isaac Levitan, Vasily Polenov and Valentin Serov.

In 1903, at the request of the businessman and philanthropist Sergei Morozov, Sokolov headed the Art-woodworking and Woodcarving Workshop in Sergiev Posad created by the Moscow provincial county and worked there until the end of the 1920s. The workshop was engaged in organizing the production of modern handicrafts, made according to the projects of professional artists who worked in the Crafts Museum or collaborated with it. In addition to production, the workshop taught children to carve and paint on wood.

The project was a success — by the 1910s, the volume of production increased significantly. The workshop began to attract numerous independent artisans from Sergiev Posad and the surrounding area to fulfill orders. Most of the items presented in this section of the exposition were made in the Sergiev Posad art and carpentry workshop.

Vladimir Sokolov came to the workshop as an already famous painter. At that time, he actively participated in exhibitions of associations of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions and the World of Art. The artist created his own unique style, which is sometimes called “sokolovsky”. Screens, caskets and chests, dishes, carved items decorated with geometric carvings, were decorated with picturesque inserts, mostly landscape ones. Sokolov is considered the creator of the new technique — painting wooden products on a burnt contour. The artist also created designs for items in which carving had an independent meaning. He borrowed its motives from genuine objects of peasant art: distaffs, smoothers, architectural elements. The exposition features a cupboard designed by the artist and a low table decorated with an image of a tutelary deity with two tails.
