Saberi (Tibetan) is a container for blessed water ‘rashiyana’. It is the canonical attribute of the Buddhist monk gelong who’d made the upper spiritual vows.
Gelong (bhikkhu in Sanskrit) is the higher level of the monastic initiation in Buddhism. A bhikkhu keeps over 220 vows of Vinai based on the principle of Personal liberation, and keeps to the special norms of behavior connected with these vows. But first of all they refrain from doing four specific things leading to the failure and the final losing of the vows.
Killing a person, including an embryo, in a womb which is also considered a human being in Buddhism.
Stealing a thing, which wasn’t given, which is a subject of criminal liability according to the laws of the country where the object was stolen.
Any sexual relations with a living creature regardless its gender.
Lie regarding having some exceptional abilities of qualities which a person doesn’t have in reality.
Gelongs play roles of bandi’s (monk students) mentors and hold pride of place in the Buddhists’ meetings. They work as ordinants, give blessings, perform rituals and conduct ceremonies according to the spiritual statute. When ordained, gelongs get the sacral attributes with saberi being one of them.
The main purpose of saberi is keeping “rashiyana” water (blessed water) required for perfusion, mouth and hands rinse. The measuring spoon acting as a breloque shows that this object could belong to “emchi”, the doctor of Tibetan medicine.
Saberi looks like a flat container made of copper. It is round, with a long neck and wooden baluster-like plug. Its neck is made of the composition of yellow metals and is decorated with the rows of wiry filigreed straps and circular rollers. Saberi is sewed into the trapezoidal case made of dark-red doubled up cloth. The small tags with the leather straps for keeping the plug are brazed to the container. The straps are tied to the cast circle where the measure spoon is also hung. The spoon is decorated with the lengrthway profile engraved with the flower, transversal carving and schemed image of vadjra.
Ornaments on the surface of the Buddhist attributes often have a deep symbolical meaning, for example, symbol “vadjra” symbolizes spiritual power and thunder, while a floral lotus ornament is a symbol of spiritual pureness.
