In the 1890s, Charles Cottet worked on “In the land of the sea.” This triptych depicting the life of Breton fishermen was inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel “Toilers of the Sea.” The central painting of this triptych is “Farewell Dinner, " where we can see fishermen spending time with their wives and children for the last time before setting sail. The right and left parts of the artwork depict fishermen in the sea and their families on the shore. Those paintings are now exhibited in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. In this study we can see the central part of the panel “Farewell Dinner” with a newly married couple: a man is holding his wife’s hand, and there is a meager meal in front of them. The group accompanying the couple and listening to the toast to the fishermen’s safe return is the semantic center of the composition. A colorful still life with fruits can be seen in front of the young couple, demonstrating the influence of Gauguin’s works.
