The Portrait of Fyodor Uvarov
#4
Fyodor Uvarov was born in 1769 in the Tula province. At the age of six he was signed up to service, but until the age of 18 he lived with his mother in the village: Uvarov 's father was sued, and the property was seized. Only in 1787 Fedor Uvarov managed to come to St. Petersburg and get to the Sofia Infantry Regiment as a captain. Uvarov received the ranks of Prime Major and Lieutenant Colonel for excellence in the Polish Campaign of 1794, when he had to fight off the enemy for 36 hours.

A year later, Suvorov promoted him to lieutenant colonel. Despite the good attitude towards him of Pavel I, Uvarov took part in conspiracy against the emperor. Fyodor Uvarov accompanied Alexander I during the move from Mikhail Castle to the Winter Palace. He became a friend of the young emperor and almost always accompanied him during walks.

For the campaign of 1805 he received the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Order of St. George. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-1810 participated in the siege of Silistria headed by General Kamensky. ‘For his brilliant participation in the Battle with the Turks near Batin’ was awarded the Order of St. George 2nd Class.

Uvarov participated the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1813 and 1814, he participated in hostilities and was also in the suite of the Emperor. He received the rank of general of cavalry and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 1st degree. In 1821 he was appointed to the position of commander of the Guards Corps. In 1823 Uvarov was appointed to the position of a member of State Council and awarded of the Order of Andrei the First-Called.

English artist George Doe was a popular portrait artist in Europe. Doe painted portraits of English generals who excelled at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1818 the artist was introduced to Alexander I. The emperor invited Doe to Russia, to paint portraits for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace. The military gallery was created to perpetuate the feat of the Russian army. Dow worked in St. Petersburg from 1819 to 1829. For Military gallery the artist wrote 329 portraits of generals ― participants of Patriotic war of 1812 and foreign campaigns of 1813―1814.

The portrait by George Doe 's from the collection of the Alupkin Museum-Reserve is chest length image of Uvarov in the red military uniform of the Cavalergard Regiment. Fyodor Petrovitch has black curly hair, small sideburns on cheeks, which are fashion trends of those times, he is peering up and far away.
Torso is faceforward, the right hand crosses the torso as if taking a sword out of the scabbard, the head is turned to the right. All his pose, angle of the head, determined look, gaze up and away - show him as a man of will and courage. There’re two strips of silver braid on the collar of his uniform, golden epaulets on his shoulders, a silver knot on his chest, a cross of the Saint George Order, a number of medals, a three-star award on the left.

Uvarov’s portrait leaves no doubt as to the courage and combat heroism of the Russian army.
