In 1834, Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov graduated from the School of Cavalry Junkers and Ensign of the Guard in St. Petersburg as a cornet in the His Majesty’s Life Guards Hussar Regiment. The regiment was quartered in Tsarskoye Selo. On this occasion, his grandmother commissioned a portrait of her grandson. This portrait became one of the most famous images of Lermontov.

It is believed that the artist embellished the appearance of Mikhail Lermontov in the portrait. His second cousin Akim Shan-Giray recalled,

He <…> was small in stature, but grew broader in the shoulders and bulkier, his face was still dark and not good-looking; but he had an intelligent look, well-defined lips, soft hair, very delicate and beautiful hands…” A vivid description of Lermontov’s appearance was provided by the writer Ivan Turgenev, “In Lermontov’s appearance there was something sinister and tragic; some kind of a gloomy and evil power, brooding contempt and passion emanated from his dark face, from his big and unmoving eyes. Their heavy gaze strangely did not correspond to the expression of his almost childishly tender and protruding lips. His entire figure, stumpy, with bandy legs, a large head on stooped, broad shoulders, gave rise to an unpleasant feeling, yet the existing power was immediately obvious to everyone.

At first, the portrait was dated 1834. However, biographers of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov noticed that in the painting the poet is depicted in the uniform of the Life Guards Hussar Regiment with epaulets of the 1837 standard. Thus, the portrait was made between April 9, 1838, the beginning of Lermontov’s return to service in the Life Guards, and December 6, 1839. Then Lermontov was awarded the rank of lieutenant, which corresponds to two stars on the epaulets. In this portrait, there is one star on Mikhail Lermontov’s epaulets.

In 1837, Lermontov caused a great furor in the literary scene with the poem “Death of the Poet” about the tragic death of Alexander Pushkin. The poem made Mikhail Lermontov a prominent poet, but also led to scandals and even a trial, which was followed by Emperor Nicholas I himself. Pushkin’s friends, first of all Vasily Zhukovsky, who was close to the imperial family, stood up for Lermontov. As a result, Lermontov was sent to serve in the Caucasus.
