The Victory Museum houses a collection of portraits of famous Soviet military commanders. During the Great Patriotic War, each of them fought valiantly and defended the motherland. One of the most prominent military commanders was Semyon Nikiforovich Perevyortkin, a Hero of the Soviet Union.
The portrait was created by Boris Fyodorov, a war veteran and master of military and history painting. He was wounded twice and was the only painter to participate in the Battle for the Reichstag. His paintings are displayed in the greatest museums of Russia.
Semyon Perevyortkin was born into a large family of peasants. He worked at a collective farm. In 1918, his family experienced an awful tragedy. His father, a railway employee, and his seventeen-year-old sister were shot dead by Cossacks from the White Army. After that, Perevyortkin joined a special forces unit and participated in liquidating armed gangs. Back then, he was only fifteen years old.
Semyon Perevyortkin began his military career in 1921. He graduated from an infantry training school and later became the commander of a rifle platoon. Perevyortkin fought in the Soviet-Finnish war and later went to Saratov where he taught military tactics at the Frunze Academy.
He was a valiant commander and distinguished himself during the Battle of Berlin. His forces stormed the Reichstag and raised the Victory Banner over the building. His counter-intelligence agents were the first to find the bodies of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. Major General Perevyortkin was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
After the war, General Perevyortkin devoted his entire life to strengthening the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union. He was responsible for important activities at the Soviet Ministry of Defense and was Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs.
Semyon Perevyortkin died in a plane crash in the line of duty in 1961. The general was highly praised by his comrades-in-arms for his valor and service in battle. One of the streets in Voronezh is named after Perevyortkin. The building of the Studenovskaya School in Usmansky District, where he studied, is decorated with a commemorative plaque. In Usman, his bronze bust is mounted on the Alley of Heroes.
