Eugène-Louis Boudin
The Beach at Trouville
#2
In the history of the landscape genre, Eugène-Louis Boudin is known as an originator of the marina landscape – a special subgenre embracing beach scenes with upper class characters. He started painting such art works in the early 1860s in Trouville and Deauville, following the advice of Eugène Isabey. The painter showed a strip of land with groups of people on the beach, rendered using quick energetic strokes. Nevertheless, the sky and the sea remain the primary features of the landscape, and Boudin was magnificent at painting them. He does not seem to miss the smallest variations in the atmosphere, capturing their vital connection to the variations in the sea water. There is a constant interplay of sea and sky. The painter managed to create an atmosphere filled with humid silvery air and dancing, shimmering rays of light. Eugène Boudin considered painting from life a very important practice. “Everything you paint from nature is always more potent, powerful, and lively than anything you can ever attain by studio work... Three strokes you make en pleine air are more valuable than two days of painting in the studio, " he stated. The art of Boudin is a link between the Barbizon school and impressionists who were greatly influenced by his legacy. Eugène Boudin did not consider himself an impressionist, albeit the fact that he took part in the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874.
