In his works, the Kostroma sculptor Vladimir Vasilyevich Smirnov always placed the person, their feelings, experiences and fate were always at the center. “To reach out to the person. To go in pursuit of the highest beauty. To reveal the resonance of the human spirit through art, ” was what Smirnov set out for himself to do when working on portraits of people he knew, or outstanding artists and writers, whom he admired.
On February 17, 1992,
Vladimir Smirnov wrote in his diary:
I would like for everything that I am destined to do to be in line with my concept of the ‘Poet’s Garden’. My understanding, my exploration and cognition of the World. Really, this is the space where my sculptures will stand and be kept.
The gallery became the owner of the sculptor’s unique heritage and made his dream come true.
The “Poet’s Garden” was opened in 2012 and is dedicated to the art of Vladimir Vasilyevich Smirnov. Many sculptures were created specifically for this hall. Among them there are several characters in caps. The “Man in a Pointed Hat” is one such work presented in the exhibition. This sculpture is imbued with sadness.
The sculptor’s diary entries from 1989 reflect a difficult, sometimes painful process: “This seemingly decorative piece is moving along slowly. Apparently, the combination of a spectacular composition and some kind of human state carries with it the inner difficulty of this particular connection. This is a man in a pointed hat. The work must be united in form and content.” He continued:I have increased the tension. There is a sound of dissonances, there are cuts, furrows, pain. I will hold this thread. Also have to say something about fate.
Vladimir Smirnov wrote:
Correcting again. Can’t finish it in a single burst — too many ideas. And yet the main thing I would like is a story about a person. There is a collision of the external with the internal. It can be very simple and very difficult.
In this monumental image, one can recognize the allegorical self-portrait of the sculptor himself. For many years he was wearing the mask of a fool and a loser, which hid the gentle soul of a poet and the wisdom of a visionary philosopher. The earliest sculptural image of “Pierrot in a Pointed Hat”, which the sculptor made in 1987, is also presented in the hall of the Poet’s Garden.
