The 1890s are rightfully considered the peak of Camille Pissarro’s artistic life. In 1898, Pissarro moved into the Hotel du Louvre in Paris. His room had a stunning view onto Avenue de l’Opéra and the square of Théâtre-Français. In 10 weeks, the artist created two series of paintings with this motif. He was intrigued by the quickly changing weather and light. The painting Avenue de l’Opéradepicts the beauty and the poetry of the city. Pissarro achieved great technical virtuosity: the tiny dynamic brush strokes create the impression of a light and vibrant atmosphere with the effect of falling snow. At the same time, the artwork has decorative characteristics, which were common for the turn of the century and finally found their embodiment in Art Nouveau.
