The plot of the painting presents a scene from the life of St. Augustine - his conversion to Christianity.
Augustine, who had life full of indulgence and enjoyed himself a lot, once experienced a mental crisis. Suddenly there was a voice coming from above, repeating: ‘Take and read! ’ He immediately took the Holy Scripture into his hands, opened it at random, and the first lines he found were that he would find his salvation only in Christianity.
In the picture, the young man Augustine is depicted in a moment of repentance and mental focus. Before him is a thrown down semi-naked figure on the dragon, symbolizing one of heretics who Augustine fought with.
In the background, on the right there is an image of St. Augustine in the likeness of a recluse. At the top of the composition is a figure of God the Father. The work is characterized by baroque multi-figure narration, the architectural details of the buildings are clear, geometric, light and fluent, with knowledge of their proportions. Black-and-white contrast was used to provide the meaning of the picture. The artist highlights the main things while secondary details are shaded and concealed. Negative characters are also painted in dark tones. Color selection of the picture is the same. The color range is based on a combination of light tones with individual bright spots. The canvas is a preparation for a large altar composition in St. Augustine’s Cathedral in Augsburg (Germany).
