Artist’s environment

#3
Roger Bissiere, French painter, belonged to the non-figurative tradition of the School of Paris. His earlier works were made in the style of ‘lyrical abstraction’. The master joined the group of Georges Braque, Andre Favory, and Andre Lhote, and he worked as a critic and theorist at the L’Esprit Nouveau magazine.

‘Call for order’

#4
Bissiere is considered to be the author of the expression ‘call for order’, which became the motto for turning towards traditional values in European art after the First World War. Throughout this period, his artistic manner combined the clarity of classicism, the poetry of Corot, and the material density of Cezanne and Derain with avant-garde geometrization.

‘Nude in a Hammock’

#6
The artwork ‘Nude in a Hammock’ brings these characteristics together in a single decorative style. The atmosphere of this painting reflects the chamber character of early Art Deco – the art movement that emerged in France in the 1920s. The light sensation of naivety gives the composition a playful note, typical for this movement.
