Alexander Novosyolov is a Soviet and Russian muralist, stained glass artist and painter. Novosyolov is known for his revival of complex techniques for the production of classic stained-glass windows and his invention of technology for replacing a soft lead came with a brass one.
Alexander Novosyolov was born in the village of Mari-Turek, the Mari ASSR. The master studied at the Kazan Art College and the Repin Art Institute in Leningrad (the Russian Academy of Arts). Alexander Novosyolov was awarded the Federal Award “For Achievements in Culture”. The artist mainly works in ceramics, interior design and stained glass. Alexander Fyodorovich joined the Artists’ Union of the USSR as a muralist. Years of painting in the traditions of the Russian academic school made him question the style and rebel against it, looking for something new. For some time, he abandoned painting. Ceramics, interior design and stained glass have become the main topic of his creative explorations.
Alexander Novosyolov became the only muralist from Mari El accepted into the Artists’ Union of Russia. The monumental art section welcomes artists whose works are made with authentic material and are located in socially significant buildings or on the streets of the city.
Stained-glass works occupy a special place in Novosyolov’s art. He has been working in classic stained glass since 1978. Novosyolov was awarded the State Prize of the Republic for the stained glass “Triptych”, which adorns the M. Shketan National Drama Theater. Taking inspiration from the classic stained glass, its methods and technology, Alexander Novosyolov does not copy the old masters, but seeks new opportunities to enrich the expressive means of this art form. In addition to flat glass, the artist uses its relief layers.
In “The Mari Dance”, the artist used soldering to assemble the work which consists of small squares of red color. The base of the stained glass is a rectangular frame. The figure of a dancing Mari girl is depicted in the center: her head is lowered, the arms are bent at the elbows, moving to the beat of the music, the foot of one leg is raised.
