The pair of flintlock pistols from the Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum collection was made in Tula in 1768. They used to belong to Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, future Emperor Paul I. It can be deduced from inlaid with gold double-headed eagles on their grips and the letters ‘P’ on the lock plates. Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich was not very keen on hunting and hunting weapons, he was more interested in artillery. However, his status suggested that he should have various precious items in his possession, including personal high quality guns. One of these pistols even appeared in a movie. It is shown at the very beginning of the ‘Left-Hander’ movie based on the story by Nikolai Leskov which was filmed at the Lenfilm studio in 1986 and directed by Sergei Ovcharov. The movie begins with an image of the whole pistol and then the camera moves closer to show the inscription ‘Left-hander’ scratched on the lock plate. However, it is hard to believe that the character of the story written by Nikolai Leskov made guns in 1768. He must have been born 50 years later. The barrel of the first pistol is round and made of forged iron. It is divided into three parts by profiled bands. The part closest to the breech is decorated with four lengthwise planes in relief and repoussé rocaille motifs with flowers by the breech end. The middle part is decorated with an image of a double-headed eagle under three crowns inlaid with gold. The eagle holds the sceptre and the orb and cross and its body is covered with a shield depicting Saint George killing the dragon. At the breech end there is a mark with the letter ‘P’. The grip cap is decorated with repoussé and inlaid with gold flowers. The trigger guard is covered with repoussé rocaille motifs and flowers, and the lock bridle is decorated with a repoussé floral pattern. The barrel of the second pistol is also round, made of forged iron and divided into parts by profiled bands. The middle part is decorated with an inlaid with gold image of a double-headed eagle holding the sceptre and the orb and cross. The front sight is made of silver. The rear sight is located at the base of the breech tang. The touch hole is decorated with gold. On the bottom side of the barrel there are two eyelets for barrel pins. At the breech end there is also a mark with the letter ‘P’. On the lock plate there is an inlaid with gold inscription in two lines reading ‘Tula 1768’ and the stylised Latin letter ‘P’ in quotation marks.
